Cancer treatments like immunosuppressants, chemotherapy, and radiation can cause varying degrees of hair loss. This side effect of treatment can add even more anxiety to an already stressful cancer diagnosis. At Élan Hair Studio we offer immediate and long term support for women dealing with medical hair loss from cancer treatment in Houston and our goal is to alleviate as much of the hair related stress as we can.
Immediate Support
Hair loss from chemotherapy and radiation can start and progress rapidly. Many women find it helpful to cut their hair very short as they begin to lose hair following the initiation of treatment. If you don’t already have a trusted hair stylist who you can go to for this, we offer this service in our studio free of charge.
Choosing how to navigate hair loss from treatment is a deeply personal decision. Some women choose to forego wearing wigs during this time and some choose to wear wigs and there is no right or wrong choice. Those who choose to wear wigs often appreciate the sense of normalcy that their new hair allows them to have during treatment and while their hair is growing back.
For women looking for wig options we offer a full line of high quality human hair wigs that are available quickly. During our consultation process we will educate you on all of your options and you will be able to try on a variety of samples. Every wig is then customised by our team of stylists so that you feel like you when you look in the mirror. Our team also provides extensive education on how to put on and care for your wig at home.
If learning to wash and style your wig at home is something you aren’t interested in or don’t feel well enough to do — we offer ongoing styling services in our studio. We are a full service wig salon! It is ideal to wash and style your wig every 2–4 weeks and this is something we can do for you in our studio so that you don’t have to.
Long Term Support
Some medications and cancer treatments can cause changes in the colour, texture, and curl pattern of your hair as it begins to grow back following treatment. These changes may resolve over time, but for some, the changes are permanent. In other instances, your hair may not ever recover the density and fullness you had prior to treatment.
For women who have ongoing concern over their hair following regrowth after treatment, we are often able to transition away from a full wig and into a smaller hair piece such as a topper or custom designed CNC Hair System. This allows us to use your natural hair but improve issues with thinning by adding a little extra hair where you need it.

Insurance Reimbursement
In the state of Texas, most health insurance plans provide at least some level of coverage for medical wigs for cancer patients when needed due to hair loss from immune therapy, hair loss from chemotherapy, or hair loss from radiation. The amount and frequency of coverage is dependent on your specific health insurance plan. We do not work directly with the health insurance plans but we will provide detailed instructions and support so that you can file a claim and receive reimbursement based on the coverage in your plan.
